Time hath confounded our mindes, our minds the matter; but all commeth to this passe, that what heretofore hath been served in several dishes for a feaste, is now minced in a charger for a Gallimaufrey. If wee present a mingle-mangle, our fault is to be excused, because the whole world is become an Hodge-podge.

Imagine the knowing look that was passed between the bres and myself when this passage from Lyly was read at a job talk back in January!
But what I did not know at the time was that the bres was conceiving of THE GREATEST MINGLE-MANGLE IN THE WORLD.
Mingle-mangle is definitely going to find a way into the diss. It's the precursor to de Certeau's "sieve-order" - fascinating!
best post ever. i want to drop all of my dissertation work and spend my time searching for literary mentions of gallimaufries, mingle-mangles, and hodge-podges. methinks the iowa journal of cultural studies would welcome an article on such findings.
